Racing enthusiasts can experience the roar of the engines at this oval asphalt track located 4 miles east of Gering.  One of only two such tracks in the state, competition every Friday night in the summer features stockcars, sprints, midgets and karts from six states.

Biking & Hiking
Gering’s “U” Street Pathway is used by cyclists, joggers, walkers and “trail enthusiasts” taking a scenic trek starting at 10th Street in downtown Gering and continuing up U Street to Scotts Bluff National Monument.  Part of the Monument Valley Pathways system, the pathway is 6.3 miles of adventure and escape.  For maps and more information, call the CVB at 308.436.6886.

Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area and Nature Center offers 3.5 miles of nature trails perfect for hiking and biking on 1,094 piney acres of beautiful terrain.  Three stone shelters complete with picnic tables and fireplaces are perfect for picnicking.  Whatever the time of year, you will be amazed at the close-up views of birds and wildlife surrounding the area.  Park permit required.  Call 308-436-3777.

Monument Shadows Golf Course is Gering’s scenic and challenging 18-hole course located at the base of Scotts Bluff National Monument.  The golf course features a driving range, clubhouse, pro shop and additional cart storage.

Hunting & Fishing
Lake Minatare State Recreation Area is one of the most scenic and popular recreation areas in Western Nebraska and offers fishing, camping and water recreation to be enjoyed by at the Lake approximately 15 miles east of Gering.  The area features the only inland Lighthouse in the United States.  Park permit required.  Call 308-783-2911.

Buffalo Creek State Wildlife Area is located south of Gering at Melbeta on County Roads X and 26.  The area is open to the public for hiking, biking, fishing and hunting.  A 7-acre pond is stocked and managed by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

Cedar Canyon State Wildlife Area offers hiking, biking and hunting.  West of Gering on Carter Canyon Road, Park Permit is required for access.  Call 308-436-3777.

The City of Gering boasts one of the finest park systems in the State of Nebraska; ten city parks provide a safe and clean environment for outdoor enjoyment.  Oregon Trail Park Complex features Gering’s public, outdoor swimming pool complete with a water slide.  Tennis courts, horse shoe pits, sand volleyball courts, playground equipment, baseball diamonds, ice skating rink and skateboard track are located in this park complex

Picnic shelters are available by reservation free of charge in Oregon Trail Park, Legion Park and Gardner Park.  All other picnic shelters are on a first-come, first-serve basis; shelters are equipped with 110 volt 20 amp power.  Reservations can be made in person at the City of Gering at 1025 P Street, Monday through Friday, or by calling 308-436-5096.
