Eat, drink and laugh your way through downtown Gering!  A unique and delicious half-tour tour where you’ll taste the foods, sip the drinks, meet our artisans and vendors in their shops while exploring the lively elements of main street Gering.  You’ll answer the question Whaza Runza?, imbibe of Gering’s liquid assets and enjoy “foodie” favorites from Kolaches to Pig Wings. Along the way, you’ll achieve a diploma of culinary knowledge as you learn about local goods, share some stories and savor Gering’s ethnic cuisines.  You’ll have so much fun, you’ll forget about the calories!

The Tunnels of Scotts Bluff County  - aka -  The First Cousin to the Bridges of Madison County

Submitted by Nancy Haney, Historian and dedicated FARM Volunteer

Did you know that there are four tunnels within Scotts Bluff County?  This is a self-directed tour that is available every day that Scotts Bluff National Monument is open and weather permits driving on county roads.  The tour will take approximately ½ day to complete.  The first two tunnels up the Monument’s road to the summit; an interesting fact that this road was built in the 1930’s by the CCC and it is the oldest concrete road in the state of Nebraska.  Don’t worry….this 1.6 mile road may be old but it’s well-maintained!  Park your vehicle and follow the hiking trail to the top of the Monument to the North overlook for a breathtaking view of the North Platte Valley; when your eyes are full with the views find the Saddle Rock Trail to descend the Bluff to the Visitors Center and you’ll hike through the third tunnel of the tour.  For the 4th tunnel you’ll get back in your car and drive to Rifle Site Pass to the Gering Ft. Laramie Canal to see the entrance of the 10’3” diameter tunnel built by the Bureau of Reclamation in 1926.  Approximately 107,000 acres of irrigable land is watered through this tunnel!  We won’t leave you high and dry; tour instructions will get you back to Gering via Robidoux (pronounced Roo ba doo) Pass in time for your next adventure!
